Membership

“For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.” (Romans 12:4-5)

At Germantown United Methodist Church we strive to be the church that Jesus intended—a community of believers who meet together to learn from and follow Christ and spread the message of God’s love. We teach and share. We sing and laugh. We roll up our sleeves, get involved and try to change the world! GUMC is a large church, but not too large. It is a church of open doors, open hearts and open minds. Our congregation covers many generations and includes people at every stage of faith. We welcome those seeking God’s truths, regardless of questions or life experiences. No matter where you are on your journey, God loves you and we welcome you.

We rejoice that you have found Germantown United Methodist Church to be a place where you feel nurtured and challenged to grow as a disciple of Christ. Our membership process intentionally allows you both to grow and to get to know us better. It also allows us to welcome you and come to know you as a part of the GUMC family.

Profession of Faith or Reaffirmation of Faith

If you are joining by Profession of Faith or Reaffirmation of Faith, meaning that you are not currently a member of any other church, we look forward to you attending our class on The Basics of the Christian Faith. After completing The Basics of the Christian Faith class, you will have a class on Basic Methodist Beliefs and then be invited to stay for a Coffee with the Pastors.

Transfer of Membership

If you are joining by Transfer of Membership from another denomination, we look forward to you attending our class on Basic Methodist Beliefs and to stay for a Coffee with the Pastors.

Transfer of UMC Membership

If you are joining by Transfer of Membership from another United Methodist congregation, we look forward to you attending a Coffee with the Pastors prior to joining.

Coffee With Pastors

Coffee with the Pastors is an opportunity for you to meet our pastors personally, to hear the story of Germantown UMC, and to understand the vows of membership and the promises you are making to Christ through the Church. A coffee meeting is scheduled once a month on a Sunday evening. Check our Calendar page or call 754-7216 for more information on the next sessions. After completing Coffee with the Pastors, new members schedule a Sunday that is convenient for them to take the vows of membership in worship.

Confirmation

Children under 12 who have not been through confirmation are considered preparatory members and encouraged to go through confirmation in the 6th grade. Students older than 6th grade that have not been confirmed are encouraged to attend the Christian beliefs class and the Methodism course with their parents, and meet with one of the pastors before joining with their families as full members.
