Missions Philosophy

At GUMC, we see ourselves as “sent” people. We are sent into the world by Jesus to continue the restoring and healing ministries He started while on this earth. Our vision is to become a church where our primary focus is outward to those beyond our culture and context. We are committed to enabling and fostering the spiritual growth of our members through their engagement in missions. Our goal is to have our entire membership involved in missions in some capacity. God has given each of us different gifts for the building of His kingdom, but we are all called to serve.

Matthew 28:19

Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.”

Room In The Inn Winter Shelter. Every Friday November through March, GUMC will welcome 14 homeless guests to The Cottage for food, fellowship, shelter and love. To view a list of needed items, please click here. For more information, please contact Alise Davis at or at 901-496-6402.

Bringing Hope. Do you have an hour each week to help Kindergarteners and First Graders become proficient readers and with lunchroom manners? Hope Presbyterian, which partners with GUMC in Team Read, seeks volunteers at Memphis Scholars Academy/Caldwell-Guthrie. You may choose any day, Monday through Thursday, to tutor the same two students, same day, once a week. No training is required, only a brief on site background check and a 20 minute orientation. Contact Jackie Flaum at for details or to sign up.
