Elements of Worship

About our Worship

The best way to learn about our worship is to experience it first hand! If you’d like to know what to expect, check out a recent worship bulletin.

All of our worship services are held in the Sanctuary.

TRADITIONAL SERVICE
11:00 A.M.

The same United Methodist worship service you’ve come to know and love at GUMC, with robed clergy, classic hymns, and communion on the first Sunday of every month.

ANCIENT-MODERN SERVICE
9:40 A.M.

The Ancient-Modern service, introduced in 2014, blends traditional worship elements with modern Christian music.

Communion Offering

On the first Sunday of every month, offerings are collected during our Sunday worship services to go to organizations supported by the Methodist church. These organizations do great work in both local communities and on a national level.

Some organizations who have received communion offerings from GUMC in the past year include: The Wesley Foundation of University of Memphis, Caldwell-Guthrie Elementary School, Mountain T.O.P., and the Kenya Summer Mission to Maua.

Frequently Asked Questions

June Communion Offering

Room in the Inn-Memphis is an ecumenical ministry that serves people experiencing homelessness.  Now beginning its sixth year in Memphis, the program provides emergency shelter and meals during the coldest months of the year—November through March. It is modeled after the incredibly successful Room in the Inn program that started in Nashville 30 years ago.

Sacrament of Baptism

Holy Baptism is a covenant between an individual and God. It is God’s word to us, proclaiming our adoption by grace and our word to God, promising our response of faith and love.

We welcome your inquiry about the sacrament of baptism and we look forward to assisting you in this memorable occasion. To learn more call the church office at 754-7216.

Persons of all ages may be baptized at Germantown United Methodist Church. Non-members are encouraged to seek membership as soon as possible after being baptized.  We baptize by sprinkling Holy Water and make the sign of the cross on the forehead with anointing oil to invite the presence of the Holy Spirit. The United Methodist Church recognizes baptisms from other faiths and churches and therefore does not “re-baptize.”

sanctuary-flowersFlowers in the Sanctuary

Flowers symbolize the resurrection. In our services, we feature decorative arrangements and rosebuds given by members in honor or memory of their loved ones. Moreover, every flower you see in our service is real – according to United Methodist traditions, no part of worship can be fake or misrepresentative of reality.

Sanctuary Flowers

Flowers for the sanctuary are a treasured way to enhance worship while honoring or remembering loved ones or commemorating a special occasion. Please email  or call 754-7216 for more information or to reserve a date.

Rosebuds

Rosebuds are placed on the altar to signal new births in our church congregation. To request a rosebud, email  or call 754-7216.

Music

Music is a natural and joyful extension of worship. Music is essential to all worship at GUMC – our services feature everything from modern Christian rock in our Ancient-Modern service to classic, ancient hymns with beautiful organ accompaniment in our Traditional service. A variety of choirs, including bell choirs, are available for members to join, and we also offer private music lessons.
