How to Join
“For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function,
so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.”
Romans 12:4-5
At Germantown United Methodist Church we strive to be the church that Jesus intended—a community of believers who meet together to learn from and follow Christ and spread the message of God’s love. We teach and share. We sing and laugh. We roll up our sleeves, get involved and try to change the world! GUMC is a large church, but not too large. It is a church of open doors, open hearts and open minds. Our congregation covers many generations and includes people at every stage of faith. We welcome those seeking God’s truths, regardless of questions or life experiences. No matter where you are on your journey, God loves you and we welcome you.
We rejoice that you have found Germantown United Methodist Church to be a place where you feel nurtured and challenged to grow as a disciple of Christ. Our membership process intentionally allows you both to grow and to get to know us better. It also allows us to welcome you and come to know you as a part of the GUMC family.

Types of Joining
Profession of Faith
If you are joining by Profession of Faith, which means you’ve never been baptized, your first step is to set up a meeting with one of our pastors. You may set that up by contacting Brenda West at bwest@germantownumc.org or 901-754-7216. Your next step would be to attend our membership “Welcome to GUMC!” held 6 times a year on a Sunday morning.
Reaffirmation of Faith
If you are joining by Reaffirmation of Faith, which means you have been baptized in a church, but not on any church roles, you need to attend our membership class “Welcome to GUMC!” held 6 times a year on a Sunday morning.
Transfer of Membership from other Denomination or from United Methodist Church
If you are joining by Transfer of Membership, we look forward to your attendance of our membership class “Welcome to GUMC!” held 6 times a year on a Sunday morning.
Confirmation
Children under 12 who have not been through confirmation are encouraged to go through confirmation in the 6th grade. Children older than 6th grade who have not been confirmed are encouraged to attend, with their parents, the membership class “Welcome to GUMC!” held 6 times a year on a Sunday morning and then meet with one of the pastors before joining with their families as professing members. Contact Chloe Granberry at cgranberry@germantownumc.org for more information about 6th grade confirmation.
Our Membership Class:
“Welcome to GUMC!”
“Welcome to GUMC!” is an opportunity for you to meet our ministers, some of our staff, and some key church leaders personally. It is a chance to get an overview of the history, structure, and beliefs of the United Methodist Church. It is also a sharing of the mission and work of Germantown United Methodist Church and a discussion to understand the vows of membership and the promises you are making to God through the church. This two hour class is held 6 times a year on Sunday mornings for one hour before and one hour after the 11:00 a.m. worship service. Childcare is available.
