Falling Leaves and Letting Go: A Spiritual Practice for Autumn

By Rev. Tim Carpenter, Senior Pastor

As the autumn air becomes crisp and summer’s green gives way to vibrant shades of gold, amber, and crimson, we are reminded of the annual rhythms of God’s creation. October is a season of transition, signaling a time to slow down, reflect, and reap the blessings of the past months.

In Ecclesiastes 3:1 and 6, we are reminded:

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to keep and a time to throw away.”

Finding Beauty in Release

As the trees gracefully let go of their leaves, we can find a profound spiritual lesson in the natural world around us. Nature shows us that there is a unique beauty in release.

The trees do not fight the arrival of autumn. They surrender to it, trusting that this period of shedding is necessary for new life to form deep within their roots during the coming winter.

Sometimes, our lives become cluttered with worries, old habits, or past hurts that we carry out of season. October is a wonderful time to ask ourselves:

What is God asking me to let go of today?

  • Letting go of anxiety opens our hands to receive God’s perfect peace.
  • Letting go of control allows us to trust God’s sovereign timing.
  • Letting go of old grievances clears the path for grace to renew our hearts.

Recognizing the Harvest

October is also traditionally a month of harvest, a time to gather the fruits of our labor and celebrate God’s faithful provision.

Even when the world feels unpredictable, God’s goodness remains steadfast. Take a few moments this month to consider your own spiritual harvest.

In what ways has God answered your prayers, provided unexpected comfort, or grown your faith through trials over the past year?

When we look at our lives through the lens of gratitude, we realize just how deeply rooted we are in God’s love.

May this October be a month of deep reflection, gentle release, and abundant gratitude for you and your family. Step outside, breathe in the crisp air, and marvel at the Creator who holds every changing season in His hands.
